The Chinese girl left bleeding in a road after being run over by two different vehicles and then ignored by 18 passersby has finally died.

Horrific video footage emerged earlier this week of two-year-old Wang Yue - known as Yue Yue - being knocked down by a van in Foshan, a city in the southern province of Guandong.

As she bleeds on the narrow street more than a dozen people walk or cycle past her for the next seven minutes before a second truck runs over her.

The toddler was eventually taken to hospital and survived for more than a week before eventually dying of brain failure. Both drivers who ran over the girl have been arrested.

The footage of the incident quickly spread via the internet causing shock around the world.

It shows how a woman eventually pulls the girl to the side of the road before her mother, a migrant worker in the city, rushes to see what has happened to her daughter.

The case triggered a furore across the nation, which questioned how such callousness could occur - with some blaming it a descent into an 'immoral modern society'.

China's economic boom and the growing disparity between the rich and poor have made changing social values a contentious topic, with some lamenting what they see as materialism replacing morals

Yue Yue's death quickly became the most talked about topic on China's version of Twitter, Sina's Weibo.

Gongzai Xiaoben posted: 'I hope that this little angel who was discarded by society can act as a wake-up call to the nation about the importance of moral education.'

Winter space added: 'Hope you can find some love in heaven. This world is full of apathy.'

Her father had received more than 270,000 yuan ($42,280) to help pay for Wang's medical treatment after receiving donations from across the globe.

One local Communist party chief urged 'searching reflection' over the incident, according to the official Guangzhou Daily.

'Take active and effective steps to raise the moral standards of the entire society,' he told a meeting of province officials.

'We should look into the ugliness in ourselves with a dagger of conscience and bite the soul-searching bullet.'

Many people in China are hesitant to help people who appear to be in distress for fear that they will be blamed.

High-profile lawsuits have ended with good Samaritans ordered to pay hefty fines to individuals they sought to help.

A critically injured Chinese toddler left to die in the street after she was run over twice is brain dead, doctors said today.

The parents of two-year-old Yue Yue – which translates as Little Joy in Chinese - may now face the agonising decision about when to turn off the life support machine keeping their daughter alive.

The Chinese Government's state news agency Xinhua quoted doctors as saying Yue Yue 'is in a deep coma and clinically brain dead'.

It appears her condition has deteriorated, despite showing signs of some recovery earlier this week.

'We cannot give any information,' said a hospital spokesman this morning.

Her parents, who are poor migrant workers, have been keeping millions informed about their daughter's condition via a specially created website.

Yesterday they posted that Yue Yue was showing signs of recovery and said medication had been reduced.

Reports claimed her heart beat had stabilised and she had regained the ability to take weak breaths and some feeling in her arms.

But as of Wednesday evening Beijing time, no update had been posted.

There were initial reports this morning that Yue Yue had died, but these appear to be unfounded.

The shocking incident was caught on CCTV and has stunned millions in China, with many saying their society – which has enjoyed 30 years of rapid development – is rotten and immoral.

It also sparked global outrage after more than a dozen people can be seen in the footage walking or driving past the stricken girl as she lay in the street in Foshan city, Guandong province.

The case is quickly becoming a political issue and it is feared Communist Party officials have called for tighter controls over the reporting about the incident for fear of a public backlash.

President Hu Jintao is in his final year of office and his main policy and slogan has been to build a 'harmonious society'.

But millions are using Yue Yue's tragedy to highlight all that is wrong with modern China and claim their society is anything but harmonious.

Public anger is festering over rampant corruption in politics and business, lack of the rule of law, pollution that is seeing cancer rates soar and the widening rich-poor gap, with many of the 'spoilt' siblings of the political elite – so called princelings – being singled out for extra criticism.

Both drivers who ran over Yue Yue have been arrested, but claimed not to have seen the little girl in the 'dark' street.

Chinese media reports that one of the men had allegedly just broken up with his girlfriend and was on his mobile phone when he hit the girl.

The Shanghaiist claims one driver called Yue Yue's father to offer him money just before he was arrested.

It claims he said: 'You saw that girl on the CCTV footage, she didn't see where she was going, you know.

'I was on the phone when it happened, I didn't mean it.

'When I realised I had knocked her down, I thought I'd go down to see how she was.
'Then when I saw that she was already bleeding, I decided to just step on the gas pedal and escape seeing that nobody was around me.'

Authorities in Foshan presented Chen Xianmei, a rubbish collector who went to Yue Yue's aid, with $1,570 as a reward.

Another company in the city has also offered to donate $7,500 to her family and rescuer.

Many people in China are hesitant to help people who appear to be in distress over fears they will be blamed.

High-profile law suits have ended with good Samaritans ordered to pay hefty fines to individuals they sought to help.

The incident has also sparked a series of soul-searching articles in Chinese newspapers, including the Guangzho Daily and People's Daily Online.

Cancer-stricken mother dies 23 days after giving birth to daughter she saved by refusing chemotherapy treatment

Faced with the knowledge that only chemotherapy would save her from terminal neck cancer, newly-pregnant Stacie Crimm made the ultimate sacrifice.

The 41-year-old, who had been told by doctors she would never be able to conceive a child, decided to refuse the treatment so her unborn daughter could live instead.

Stacie was able to survive for five months before being forced to deliver Dottie Mae, weighing just 2lbs 1oz, by Caesarean section - and even managed to hold her on one occasion before succumbing to the disease three days later.

'This baby was everything she had in this world,' Stacie's brother Ray Phillips told the Oklahoman.

It was he Stacie called in March when she received the unfathomable news that she was pregnant after years of thinking she was infertile.

'You're not going to believe this,' the mother-to-be had told him in a mixture of laughter and tears, according to The Oklahoman.

But over the next days and weeks, as she shopped for all the things her baby would need, a serious worry began to gnaw at Stacie. She was having severe headaches and double vision, while tremors struck every inch of her body.

She began to tell Ray of her growing concerns. 'I'm worried about this baby,' she said in one text, according to the Oklahoman. 'I hope I live long enough to have this baby,' said another message. 'Bubba, if anything happens to me, you take this child.'

Stacie was no longer with the father of the baby and would have raised her daughter as a single mother if she survived.

At her family's encouragement, Stacie visited a number of doctors and in July, a CT scan revealed that she had head and neck cancer.

She had to do what no would-be mother should have to - choose between her life and that of her baby's. It was an easy decision.

Ray told the Oklahoman that his sister waived the potentially lifesaving chemotherapy in the hope that she would eventually hold a healthy baby in her arms.

Then on August 16, Stacie collapsed at her home in Ryan, Oklahoma and was rushed to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Doctors said the invasive tumour had begun wrapping around the brain stem, the Oklahoman reported.

Two days later the baby's heart rate plummeted, then Stacie's heart stopped. Code Blue was issued. Doctors and nurses rushed to her aid and decided a C-section was the baby's only chance.

Dottie Mae arrived into the world weighing less than a third of an average newborn.

She was swiftly taken to neonatal intensive care, while her mother was placed in intensive care in another building.

'Sister was dying right there. She was gasping,' Ray told the Oklahoman. 'The human body fights death.'

Stacie fought back and managed to wrestle herself off the ventilator and sedation after a few days. 'There was still a lot of hope at that point,' said Ray's wife Jennifer.

But the cancer had affected one of her eyes and destroyed the muscle behind it,

It had paralysed her throat so that when she did talk, she was hard to understand. She had tumours on her brain. She often became unconscious and had not been able to sign Dottie Mae's birth certificate.

Stacie was too weak to be taken to her baby, and her baby was too weak to be brought to her.

'We'd show her pictures and she would cry and she would want to hold her baby,' Ray told NewsOk. 'It was quite the ordeal. I felt helpless. I wanted to help her, I wanted to do what I could for her - we all did - but they had told us it was impossible for her to see the child.'

On September 8, Stacie stopped breathing and once again was resuscitated. Hospital staff warned the family that she was very close to death.

But she had not yet held, kissed or looked into the blue eyes of the baby whose life she had chosen above her own.

Nurse Agi Beo, herself a mother, could not bear to think of Stacie's emotional pain and decided to do something about it.

She worked with nurse Jetsy Jacob and talked to Neoflight, the medical centre's neonatal transport team, about using a capsule-like ICU to safely move Dottie Mae to her mother.

'I knew all of this was going on in the background and I didn't say nothing to her until I knew it was going to happen because I didn't want to get her hopes up,' Ray said.

He asked his sister what she would would think about seeing her daughter that day. Stacie's eyes popped open and she began looking around to find her.

Soon the nurses arrived with Dottie Mae and laid her right on her mother's chest. The two stared into each other's eyes for several minutes.

'Nobody said anything, it got real quiet,' Ray told NewsOk. 'I told my sister, "You have done a beautiful thing". It was the perfect moment, that's what I called it.'

Stacie died three days later. Her funeral was on September 14.

Her obituary on the Dudley Funeral Homes website reads: 'Dottie Mae was the light of her life and her greatest accomplishment. She chose to give this baby life instead of taking treatment for herself.'

Dottie Mae now lives with Ray, his wife Jennifer and their four children in their Oklahoma City home

'I think she's a miracle. I just want to do right by her and do what Stacie asked,' Jennifer said.
