Gilad Shalit (born August 28, 1986) is an Israeli and a French citizen and an IDF soldier who was captured from Israel, 25 June 2006 by Hamas militants in a cross-border raid. Shalit was abducted near the Kerem Shalom (Israel), and was taken hostage in an unknown location in Gaza by Hamas until October 11, 2011.
Hamas has rejected the request of the International Committee of the Red Cross to allow the ICRC to visit Shalit, stating that this visit may reveal that Shalit is held prisoner.
