Punk princess: Cher Lloyd insists she is much happier shopping in New Look than in Selfridges

She's one of the most well-known faces from The X Factor, but Cher Lloyd isn't she's not been changed by fame.

The 18-year-old With Ur Love singer says she is much more comfortable shopping for clothes in New Look than Selfridges, although she admits her fans are sometimes surprised to see her browsing in a high-street store.

She told Attitude magazine: 'I haven’t changed, honestly. When I go home, I go into Morrisons and I do my mum’s shopping. And down the veg aisle they’ll be all in my face. Lovely, though. The funniest comment that I got is when I was in New Look and someone said to me, “What are you doing in here?”’

'Like she’s supposed to be in Harrods or something. I can’t go there. I don’t fit in there. I feel out of place. I went into Selfridges and felt out of place. I so don’t belong in places like this…'

Cher made the admission as she embraced her colourful side with two-tone hair and patterned lips in the Attitude photoshoot.

And Cher said she had no idea how much her life would change after taking part on The X Factor.

Honesty is the best policy: Cher made the admission as she posed in a quirky new shoot for Attitude magazine

Recalling how she tried to make it as a singer before the show, Cher said: 'I used to go to these low-rent recording studios in people’s houses. My nan would pay the money for me to record songs. I was singing Hopelessly Devoted To You at one point! It’s what I used to do.’

‘I used to do these shows at a British Legion in front of really old men. There would be about 10 people and I swear they couldn’t hear a thing that I was singing because their hearing aids were turned off.

'This was when I was about 13 or 15 and I’d get paid a tenner and I used to think it was like the best thing ever.'

Cher also said she gets annoyed when people criticise those singers who start in the industry on The X Factor, adding: 'It’s the most nerve-wracking, and your whole life changes immediately.’

As well as getting a career out of her time on The X Factor, Cher also made a friend in music mogul Simon Cowell, who she says knew exactly how to whip her into shape when she was misbehaving.

She said: 'I like people who have authority, If I was being a moody cow one day, I’d want someone to say, "Don’t be like that! You’ve got a job to do! Do this and do this!" '
